About This Experience

Madrid Río is the newest of the routes Segway tours ride in the city, and the least visited by tourists. It is a linear park running about seven kilometres along the Manzanares, built on top of the M-30 motorway after the road was buried in a tunnel and opened in 2011.

That history is the reason it rides well. The park was designed around continuous walking and cycling routes rather than retrofitted into an old street grid, so there are long uninterrupted stretches and almost no traffic — a different proposition from threading a Segway through the Habsburg centre.

The tour runs ninety minutes from a shop near Ópera, so there is a stretch of city riding at each end before the river. Guiding is in English, Spanish or French, with the same photo service as the operator's other routes.

¡¡Please, note that you have to arrive 15 minutes before the tour. In case of delay, you will be given a 10-minute grace period. Otherwise, you will be placed on another tour if possible!!

Following a booking problem, I did the tour with a Spanish family and the guide spoke in English and Spanish so that we could all understand. The tour was superb! The guide took the time to train people who had never been on a Segway, showed us around the city, then the park. He took the time to take our pictures, answer our questions, and give us recommendations for places, restaurants or specialties. The Spanish family was mostly from Madrid but still discovered things. I highly recommend it. I was all alone and yet I felt like I was instantly part of this family. A big thank you to the guide. I had a great time!

Is it better than a centre or Retiro tour?

Different rather than better. Madrid Río is open, modern and almost traffic-free, with far fewer visitors; the centre has the monuments and Retiro has the gardens. Book the river if you have already done the standard sights, or if you want distance and space rather than stops.

Where does the tour start?

Calle de la Escalinata 10, near Ópera metro. The first and last stretches are city riding before and after the river section.

What are the limits?

Minimum age nine, with 9 to 17-year-olds accompanied by an adult. Minimum height 130 cm, maximum weight 120 kg (264 lb). Not suitable during pregnancy.
