How a Retiro Segway Tour Runs

From the shop on Menéndez Pelayo to the last photo stop.

  1. Meet at the Park Gate

Most Retiro tours start from a shop on Avenida de Menéndez Pelayo, beside the park's eastern gates. Arrive 15 minutes early — operators hold a 10-minute grace period and no longer.

  2. Train on Flat Ground

A briefing and a short practice loop before you ride out. Guides drill mounting and dismounting hardest, because that is where first-timers wobble.

  3. Ride the Monument Loop

Casa de Fieras, the Cecilio Rodríguez gardens, the Fallen Angel fountain, the Rosaleda, the Palacio de Cristal, the Estanque Grande and the Alfonso XII colonnade.

  4. Collect the Photos

Guides photograph the group at each stop and share the images afterwards. You cannot safely ride a Segway and hold a phone, so this matters more than it sounds.

Retiro Park

Choosing Between Madrid's Five Retiro Segway Tours

One hour or two, shared or private, and which operator lets a nine-year-old ride.

Retiro is where Madrid’s Segway industry actually lives. Five of the seventeen Segway tours bookable in the city ride the park, and between them they hold more reviews than every historic-centre route combined. That is not marketing; it is a consequence of the ground.

Why the park rides better than the city

Madrid’s Sustainable Mobility By-Law classifies a Segway as a personal mobility vehicle. That keeps it off pavements entirely and confines it to bike lanes and streets limited to 30 km/h, with a 25 km/h cap and no phone use while riding. In the Habsburg street grid that means sharing road space with traffic, negotiating cobbles and stopping at junctions.

Retiro has none of those constraints. Roughly 125 hectares of wide, level, largely car-free path, laid out originally as the private grounds of a 17th-century royal retreat and handed to the city after 1868. Since July 2021 it has also carried a UNESCO World Heritage listing, inscribed alongside the Paseo del Prado as the Landscape of Light — the first World Heritage site inside the city of Madrid.

For a first-time rider the practical effect is simple: you spend the hour looking at the park instead of watching the road.

The five Retiro tours, and what separates them

One hour, shared — Iconic Retiro Park Segway Tour, $39. The most reviewed Segway tour in Madrid by a wide margin, at 949 reviews and 4.8/5. Eight stops in sixty minutes, which works because Retiro is compact. Photos included. This is the default booking and the one to make if you are unsure.

Ninety minutes, shared — Retiro Park 1.5-Hour Segway Tour, $40. The extra half hour goes into the quieter gardens between the headline monuments rather than the monuments themselves. It starts from Calle de Santiago in the centre, so budget a few minutes of street riding at each end.

Two hours, shared — Retiro Park Segway Tour, $36. Starts at Plaza de Ópera and rides through the Barrio de las Letras in both directions, so you get the literary quarter as well as the park. The cheapest way to spend two hours on a Segway in Madrid.

One to two hours, private — Private Retiro Park Segway Tour, $40. You choose the length and the group is yours. It runs on all-terrain Segway X2s, which handle the unpaved garden paths better than the city machines.

One to three hours, private, park plus centre — Private Segway tour: Retiro Park and Centro Histórico, $40. The only Madrid tour that sells both halves of the city privately on one ride, with hourly departures from 10:00 to 20:00.

The route, stop by stop

The one-hour loop is the template the others extend. It opens at the Antigua Casa de Fieras — Madrid’s first zoo, now an exhibition space — then reaches the Cecilio Rodríguez gardens, where the park’s peacocks live.

The Fountain of the Fallen Angel comes next: Ricardo Bellver’s bronze of Lucifer, sculpted in 1877 and installed here in 1885, and one of very few public monuments anywhere to depict the devil.

Then the postcard half. The Rosaleda rose garden, the Palacio de Cristal — a cast-iron and glass pavilion Ricardo Velázquez Bosco designed for the 1887 Philippines Exposition, built as a greenhouse for tropical plants and now an exhibition space with nothing in it but light — the Estanque Grande with the Alfonso XII colonnade rising above it, and the formal Parterre on the way back.

Age and weight limits differ by operator

This is the detail that decides which Retiro tour a family can book at all. Madrid Segway, which runs the Iconic Retiro loop, sets the minimum at nine years old, with a 130 cm minimum height and a 120 kg ceiling. All Ways Madrid, SEGCITYTOURS and Wonder Tours Spain all set theirs at ten. SEGCITYTOURS additionally requires a minimum weight of 35 kg on its private rides, which rules out slighter children who would otherwise clear the age limit.

Riders under 18 must be accompanied by an adult on every one of them. The family page lays out all of it side by side.

One thing that can close the park

Madrid City Council occasionally shuts Retiro at short notice for safety — high wind is the usual reason, after a storm brought down trees here. Operators handle it by riding an alternative route rather than cancelling, and free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start applies regardless.

If you want the park and the monuments of old Madrid in the same trip, the combined Retiro and downtown tours are built for exactly that. If you are still deciding how long to book, the duration comparison is the page for it. Otherwise, check availability — nothing is charged today.

"I was lucky enough to have a private tour with Alan. This was my first time riding a Segway, but it was such a fun experience! The tour started with a tutorial on how to ride the Segway, and Alan explained everything very clearly and patiently, especially the most important part: how to safely get on and off the Segway. It was great exploring the park and visiting the main highlights that I otherwise might have missed or not seen. Alan also gave me some great recommendations for other places to visit in Madrid, which was a really nice bonus. Highly recommended!"

"We absolutely loved the segway tour with Alan our guide. He greeted us with a huge smile which carried on throughout the tour. He explained how to use the segways very well & made sure that we were ok before we went on the tour around Retiro park. He looked out for us on the whole trip giving us tips on how to manage some of the terrain. He was very knowledgeable & showed us lots of interesting things. Unfortunately some of the things were closed but he showed us pictures on his phone so we would have a reference to what he was talking about. He gave us a reference point to his favourite restaurant & other places to visit in Madrid whilst we were there. We would definently recommend this tour to others."
