Riding With Children

What actually happens on the day, and where the wobbles come.

  1. Check the Age Before Booking

Nine on Madrid Segway's Retiro, downtown and river routes. Ten on everything run by All Ways Madrid, SEGCITYTOURS and Wonder Tours Spain.

  2. Check Height and Weight Too

130 cm minimum height and 120 kg maximum on the Madrid Segway tours. SEGCITYTOURS requires a minimum of 35 kg — the machine needs load to balance.

  3. Train on Flat Ground

Every tour includes a briefing and a practice loop. Mounting and dismounting is the part guides drill hardest, and it is where children wobble.

  4. Ride One Rider Per Machine

Two people on one Segway is prohibited under Madrid's mobility by-law. Every child rides their own, which is why the age floor exists at all.

Family Riding

What the Age Limits on Madrid Segway Tours Actually Are

Nine with one operator, ten with the rest — and height and weight rule out more children than either.

Two operators in Madrid market their Segway tours explicitly at families. Whether your family can actually book one comes down to four numbers, and only the first is the one people look up.

Age: nine or ten, depending on the operator

Madrid Segway — the operator behind the Iconic Retiro loop, the Downtown tour and the River tour — sets its minimum at nine years old. Its listings say so directly: children between 9 and 17 must be accompanied by an adult, and the tours are “specially designed for groups and families”.

All Ways Madrid, SEGCITYTOURS and Wonder Tours Spain all set theirs at ten, with the same accompanied-minor rule. That covers the other thirteen Segway tours in the city.

So if your youngest is nine, three routes are open to you and the rest are not. If your youngest is ten, all seventeen are. There is no operator in the current Madrid catalogue with a higher minimum than ten for a standard guided tour.

Height: 130 cm on the Madrid Segway routes

This is the limit that catches families out, because booking flows ask for ages and not heights. The Madrid Segway tours state a minimum of 130 cm (4 ft 3 in). A small nine-year-old who clears the age limit can still fail the height one at the shop, on the morning, with the tour paid for.

Measure before you book. The average nine-year-old is close enough to 130 cm that it is worth checking rather than assuming.

Weight: a floor as well as a ceiling

Everyone expects a maximum. Madrid Segway sets 120 kg (264 lb); SEGCITYTOURS sets 125 kg on its private routes and 120 kg on the shared ones.

Fewer people expect a minimum. SEGCITYTOURS requires riders to weigh at least 35 kg (77 lb) — a self-balancing Segway needs load on the platform to hold its attitude properly, and a very light child does not provide it. That floor rules out plenty of ten-year-olds who clear every other limit, and it applies to the private Retiro tour, the private Retiro and centre tour and the off-road Casa de Campo tour.

One rider per machine — always

Madrid’s Sustainable Mobility By-Law prohibits two people on one personal mobility vehicle, without exception. No child rides with a parent. That is the reason age and weight floors exist at all: every rider on the tour is riding alone, and the operator has to be confident each one can.

The same by-law requires a helmet for riders aged 16 and under. In practice every Madrid Segway tour includes a helmet for everyone, so this is not something you need to arrange.

Why Retiro is the right park route for a family

Not sentiment — surface. A Segway is barred from Madrid’s pavements and confined to bike lanes and streets limited to 30 km/h. A historic-centre tour therefore puts a ten-year-old into traffic on cobbles, with kerbs and junctions.

Retiro has wide, level, largely car-free paths and a route built around stopping. An hour there is the easiest introduction available in Madrid, and the operator that runs it is the one with the lower age floor. Madrid Río is the other calm option — a continuous riverside park with almost no traffic.

Private is worth the difference with children

On a shared departure, training ends when the group is ready. On a private one it ends when your child is steady, and the guide is watching four riders rather than twelve. In Madrid the private premium is unusually small — the private Retiro tour starts within a dollar of the shared loop — so for a family this is close to a free upgrade.

What to bring, and what to expect

Comfortable closed shoes on every tour. Water is included on the All Ways Madrid routes and not on others. Photographs are taken by the guide on the Madrid Segway routes and shared afterwards, which matters with children because no one on a Segway can legally hold a phone.

Sessions run from 10:00 to 20:00 on the private routes, so an early slot avoids the afternoon heat — in July and August that is a real consideration in Madrid, and the park routes have far more shade than the centre.

Booking for a nine-year-old? Only the Retiro, downtown and river routes will take them, and checking availability costs nothing today.

"I was lucky enough to have a private tour with Alan. This was my first time riding a Segway, but it was such a fun experience! The tour started with a tutorial on how to ride the Segway, and Alan explained everything very clearly and patiently, especially the most important part: how to safely get on and off the Segway. It was great exploring the park and visiting the main highlights that I otherwise might have missed or not seen. Alan also gave me some great recommendations for other places to visit in Madrid, which was a really nice bonus. Highly recommended!"

"We absolutely loved the segway tour with Alan our guide. He greeted us with a huge smile which carried on throughout the tour. He explained how to use the segways very well & made sure that we were ok before we went on the tour around Retiro park. He looked out for us on the whole trip giving us tips on how to manage some of the terrain. He was very knowledgeable & showed us lots of interesting things. Unfortunately some of the things were closed but he showed us pictures on his phone so we would have a reference to what he was talking about. He gave us a reference point to his favourite restaurant & other places to visit in Madrid whilst we were there. We would definently recommend this tour to others."
