Which Madrid Segway Tour Is Right for You?

Question 1 — park or city?

This decides more than anything else, and it is not a matter of taste.

Madrid’s Sustainable Mobility By-Law classes a Segway as a personal mobility vehicle. That bars it from pavements entirely, confines it to bike lanes and streets limited to 30 km/h, caps it at 25 km/h and prohibits phone use while riding. A historic-centre tour therefore spends real time in traffic, on cobbles, stopping at junctions.

Question 2 — how long?

One hour is a real tour in Retiro, because the park is compact enough to fit eight stops into it, and a taster in the centre.

Ninety minutes is where a centre route starts reaching past the obvious — and it is the length at which the longer City Center option picks up the Templo de Debod, an Egyptian temple of the 2nd century BC that Spain rebuilt west of the palace in 1972. It is far enough out that walking tours rarely include it.

Two hours is a survey. Three hours exists on one scheduled route and is not a first-timer’s tour: you are upright and lightly braced the entire time, and the last half hour is where beginners make mistakes. The duration comparison works through all of it.

Question 3 — shared or private?

In most cities this is a budget question. In Madrid it barely is. The cheapest private Segway tour in the city is $34 — below several shared routes — and the private Retiro tour starts within a dollar of the shared loop.

Question 4 — who is in the group?

The age floor differs by operator and it decides which tours you can book at all.

Nine years old on the tours run by Madrid Segway: the Retiro loop, the Downtown tour and the Madrid River tour. Ten on every tour run by All Ways Madrid, SEGCITYTOURS and Wonder Tours Spain. Riders under 18 must be accompanied by an adult in every case.

Then the limits people forget. Minimum height 130 cm on the Madrid Segway routes. Maximum weight 120 kg, or 125 kg on the SEGCITYTOURS private tours. When a Segway is the wrong choice

A Segway does not go inside the Royal Palace, the Almudena or the Mercado de San Miguel, and it is legally barred from the pedestrian lanes that make old Madrid worth walking. A guided walking tour of Retiro starts around $10 and of the centre around $22, which is a fraction of a Segway’s price, and it goes deeper.
