The short answer

Madrid Segway tours are available year-round, and Retiro Park is open every day, although the city can close it at short notice in high wind. Because the whole tour is spent standing outdoors, the temperature matters most: average highs run from about 10 °C in January to 32 °C in July.

If your dates are flexible, September offers the best overall balance: afternoons are warm rather than hot, and rain is rare. June is a close second: just as dry, with hotter afternoons. April, May and October are milder, with about twice as many rainy days. What each season is like on a Segway

Fall: September to November

September is the month we would pick for a first ride. The average high is 26.4 °C, so the afternoon is warm without being tiring, and there are only about three rainy days in the month. Early September can still feel like summer in the afternoon, so a morning ride is the safer choice in the first week or two.

October cools to an average high of 19.4 °C, which is pleasant for an hour outdoors in a light jacket. Rain comes back, though: about seven rainy days, and the largest monthly rain total of the year. November is cooler again, at 13.5 °C, and about as wet, so pack a layer and keep an eye on the forecast.

Winter: December to February

Average highs sit between about 10 and 12 °C, and the mornings are cold, with average lows of 2.7 °C in January and frost on some days. A midday or early-afternoon start gets the warmest part of the day. Bring gloves, because your hands stay on the handlebar for the whole ride.

January and February had the fewest guests staying in Madrid’s hotels in 2025, about a sixth fewer than in September, so the city as a whole is a little quieter. That count covers hotel stays across the city, not the number of people on the park paths. The night ride is cold in these months, because the temperature keeps falling after dark.

Spring: March to May

Spring warms quickly, from an average high of 16.3 °C in March to 22.2 °C in May, which is comfortable for standing on a Segway. The catch is rain: April and May get about seven rainy days each, and May has the most rainy days of the year. The Rose Garden on the Retiro route is at its best in spring, so this is the season to see it in flower.

Summer: June to August

June is warm and dry, with an average high of 28.2 °C and about three rainy days. July and August are the hottest months, with average highs of 32.1 and 31.3 °C at the observatory inside Retiro Park, and recent summers have run warmer than those long-term averages. Rain is rarely the problem: fewer than two rainy days a month.

On a hot day, take the earliest departure available on your date and choose a Retiro route. The park’s tree-lined paths give more shade than the open squares a center route crosses, such as Plaza Mayor. Bring water and a hat. A rainy day here is a day with at least 1 mm of rain, and the rain column is the month’s total, not a daily amount. Two things stand out for a ride. The city’s hotels are almost as busy in September as in May and June, so September is not a quiet month, just a comfortable one. And August has fewer hotel guests than any month from March to December, so the heat is the main thing to plan around in August, more than the crowds.

Which tour suits which season

The Iconic Retiro Park Segway Tour is one hour on the park’s paths, past the Palacio de Cristal, the Great Pond and the Rose Garden. It is the one we would book on a hot summer morning, for the shade, and on a cold winter day, because an hour is long enough. It has a rating of 4.8 from 964 reviews. Two works affect what you see in the park: the Palacio de Cristal has been closed for restoration, with the works scheduled to run into 2027, so expect to see it only from outside, and the city has announced that it will drain the Great Pond for repairs during 2027.

On a windy day, when Retiro may be partly closed, the City Center Guided Segway Tour rides the historic center around Plaza Mayor and does not depend on the park. Rain, wind and Retiro closures

Most of the year, the weather on your day matters more than the average for your month. Two things can change your plans.

Rain. SEGCITYTOURS, which runs the private Retiro and historic-center tours, states that light rain does not stop a tour and that heavy rain moves it to another time. Other operators do not publish a rain rule on their listings, so check yours. All 17 tours listed on this site offered free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start when we checked, so if heavy rain is forecast, decide before that deadline.

Wind. Retiro can be cordoned off in parts or closed temporarily under the city council’s weather-alert protocol, mainly in strong wind, when falling branches are the risk. The city posts its park alerts on the @MADRID account and on the panels at the park gates, so check both before you set off. Closures are not common: a Spanish newspaper, reporting the council’s own review in May 2026, said red-alert closures covered about 1% of the time between 2020 and 2025. SEGCITYTOURS states that it offers an alternative route if the park is closed; for other tours, ask the operator, or book a center route on a day with strong gusts in the forecast.

Sources, method and limits

Climate. The temperatures, rain totals and rainy days come from AEMET, Spain’s national weather service, for its Madrid, Retiro station (code 3195, 667 m), which sits inside the park. AEMET’s station page publishes the 1981–2010 reference period, and that is the table on this page: AEMET normal values, Madrid Retiro. AEMET’s monthly bulletins now compare against 1991–2020, which runs warmer: in its July 2024 summary, Retiro’s 28.2 °C monthly mean was 1.7 °C above normal, which puts the newer July normal near 26.5 °C against 25.6 °C in 1981–2010. We could not find the 1991–2020 monthly values for the station on any AEMET page, so the table stays on 1981–2010 and the text says recent summers run warmer. A rainy day is a day with at least 1 mm.

Visitors. Hotel guests by month come from INE, Spain’s statistics office, hotel occupancy survey (travelers by tourist point, Madrid, residents in Spain and abroad combined), for 2025: INE table 2078. It counts hotel stays across the whole city, one year only, and not visitors to Retiro or people on a tour, so we use it only for the direction of the year.

Retiro Park. Opening hours (6 a.m. to 10 p.m. from October to March, 6 a.m. to midnight from April to September) and the weather-alert closures, which the city says it posts on @MADRID and at the gates two hours before they take effect, are from the city’s tourism site: esMadrid, Parque del Retiro. The 1% figure for red-alert closures from 2020 to 2025 is as reported by El Español, May 5, 2026, which also describes a proposed change to the wind thresholds. Spring as the Rose Garden’s peak bloom is from Turismo de la Comunidad de Madrid.
