Madrid Segway Tours

Madrid has one of the deepest Segway catalogues in Europe — seventeen separate tours currently bookable, run by five operators, priced from $32 to $69. That looks like a lot to sort through. It is not, because almost all of the difference between them comes down to one decision: do you ride the park or the city? Get that right and the rest — length, price, private or shared — follows.

The park and the city ride very differently

This is not a matter of taste. Madrid’s Sustainable Mobility By-Law treats a Segway as a personal mobility vehicle, which means it is barred from pavements and confined to bike lanes and streets limited to 30 km/h, capped at 25 km/h, with no phone use while riding. A historic-centre tour therefore spends part of its time in traffic, negotiating kerbs, cobbles and delivery vans in the Habsburg grid.

Retiro Park has none of that. Wide, level, largely car-free paths, and a route built around stopping rather than progressing. Every Madrid operator that runs both will tell you the same thing if you ask: the park is where beginners should start. The centre earns its place anyway, because the monuments are there. The historic-centre routes ride the Royal Palace — at 135,000 square metres the largest royal palace in Western Europe — plus the Almudena Cathedral, Plaza Mayor, Plaza de la Villa and, on the longer ones, the Templo de Debod, a 2nd-century-BC Egyptian temple that Spain rebuilt on a hill west of the palace in 1972.

What each duration actually buys

An hour is a sampler. On the Retiro loop that is enough for eight monument stops, because the park is compact; in the centre it covers the Plaza Mayor–Royal Palace–Almudena triangle and stops there.

Ninety minutes is where the centre routes start reaching past the obvious. Two hours is the length at which a centre tour picks up the Templo de Debod and the Mercado de San Miguel, or a park tour stops hurrying. Three hours — there is exactly one, the All Madrid route — crosses the whole centre and takes in Retiro as well.

Age limits are not the same across operators

Nine years old on the tours run by Madrid Segway — the Retiro, downtown and river routes. Ten on everything sold by All Ways Madrid, SEGCITYTOURS and Wonder Tours Spain. Riders under 18 must be accompanied by an adult in every case, and the physical limits are real: 130 cm minimum height and a 120 kg ceiling on the Madrid Segway tours, a 35–125 kg window on the SEGCITYTOURS private rides.

Private costs less here than it should

In most cities a private tour carries a heavy premium. In Madrid it barely does. The routes tourists skip

Madrid Río and Casa de Campo are the two green routes almost no visitor books, and both are better riding than the centre. Madrid Río is a seven-kilometre linear park along the Manzanares, built on top of the M-30 motorway after the road was buried and opened in 2011 — continuous, near-traffic-free, designed for wheels. Casa de Campo is 1,722 hectares of former royal hunting ground, the largest urban park in Spain and about five times the size of Central Park, and one tour rides it genuinely off-road on all-terrain Segway X2s. Is a Segway the right format at all?

Sometimes not. A walking tour goes inside buildings and down streets a Segway cannot legally use. A bike tour covers similar ground for less money and works on riders a Segway’s weight limits exclude. What a Segway buys is coverage without effort — you finish a two-hour route having seen what a three-hour walk would show you, and you are not tired.
